As part of a prosthetic device for amputees, we have been working on a lower limb exoskeleton. The system would be controlled by the user by electromyogram (EMG) signals from the residual muscles in the stump of the amputated limb. The goal is to mimic the standing or walking motion of the intact leg by providing mechanical assistance. The mechanical assistance is generated by the exoskeleton using a state machine, based on the instantaneous EMG signal of the residual muscles. Our previous studies have shown that EMG signals can be used to generate assistance with a linear state machine. However, in many cases the use of a single EMG channel is not sufficient to generate the precise assistance necessary to achieve satisfactory walking. This paper shows that for several subjects, when EMG signals from two muscles of the opposite leg are used, assistance can be generated such that the forces generated by the exoskeleton move in the same direction as the forces produced by the residual muscles in the amputated leg. In this case, a linear state machine based on EMG signals of two muscles could be used. This will be the first time that a prosthetic device is controlled by EMG signals from muscles of the opposite leg.Louisiana motorcycle traffic laws Louisiana motorcycle traffic laws are modeled after the national minimum standards set forth in the United States Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
